What is the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship?

The Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship is a program in the state of Ohio for school-aged children (grade K – age 18) with a diagnosed disability.  Recipients of the scholarship use their allotted funds to choose a private or homeschooled education for their child.  By accepting the scholarship, families waive their right to FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education).

Limited Application Windows

There are two application windows each year for the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship.  Applications received between February 1st – April 15th are for the full upcoming school year.  A second application period (October 1st – November 15th) is available for the second half of the school year (January – June).  Applications are only accepted during the approved windows.

What can scholarship funds be used for?

The money awarded by the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship can be used for tuition to a private school (if they are an approved provider to the scholarship), tutoring services, therapies, and any IEP related services.

Does my child qualify?

In order to qualify for the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship, the child must be of school age (grade K – age 18) and be on an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) with his/her school district.  Students cannot attend a public or charter school while receiving the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship.  The family must select an approved provider to the scholarship who will provide services to the child as outlined on his/her IEP.

How do I apply?

To apply for the scholarship, start by contacting an Ohio Department of Education approved provider.  Your provider will help you complete the necessary paperwork.
