Book of the Month: January 2016 (National Mentoring Month)

Our team here at North Coast Education Services is delighted about our progress with Richards Learning Systems®.  We are eagerly waiting to see our award-winning reading program come to life on video this fall!

In spirit of the occasion, I have decided to start a new feature on our blog:

Each month, I will spotlight a book for you to enjoy based on a monthly theme.  I will present a variety of books, including ones for children, teens, and adults.  With this new feature, I hope that we will encourage you to take time out of your life to sit down, open a book, and immerse yourself in a new world.

Without further ado, let’s present our first book!

Mentors are some of the most inspirational people in the world.  Whether it’s a teacher, a parent, a supervisor, or a coach, mentors lead us to believe that we can achieve our dreams.

Our book this month is The Secret School by Avi, a Newbury Medal Award-Winning author.  Follow along with Ida Bidson, a fourteen-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a teacher.  When her own one-room school is shut down, Ida fears that she’ll never see her dream become a reality.  What she does next takes all of her determination — she starts a secret school.  Swearing her students to secrecy, “Miss Bidson” now has to juggle managing her own school along with her chores in 1920’s Colorado.

Ida is truly a mentor for her students.  She wants to ensure that children receive an education, even when the odds are against them.  When the state gave up on the school, but Ida never gave up on her dream.  This is truly an inspirational story that the whole family will enjoy!

Please support the Creative Education Institute and consider purchasing your book through Amazon Smile.  0.5% of your purchase will be donated to help struggling students learn how to read.
