Basic Skills ...

In spite of huge advancements in technology, a large portion of the U.S. adult population is illiterate or functionally illiterate. Figures released by the U.S. Government indicate that the number may be as high as 50% of the adult population110 million adults are illiterate or cannot read a simple newspaper article.  Actually, the problem is compounded by advances in technology.  As computer use grows, fewer people are able to use computers and obtain jobs.

Functionally Illiterate

Many companies employ workers that are functionally illiterate. By definition this means they are able to perform many simple tasks on the job and at home. However, often they cannot read most words and sentences. They are unable to read a newspaper, road map, or a simple story in a book.   Many of these adults do not have checking accounts.

Improve Literacy

An important piece in the mission of NCES is to improve adult literacy.  We offer programs for adults to reach specific goalsGED, job promotion, degrees, advanced degrees, and specialized certification.

NCES offers adult basic skills classes at Lakeland Community College, Kirtland, Ohio, and on-site at area companies. NCES has been a key factor in individual adult learning successes throughout Northeast Ohio.
