Academic Fun & Fitness Camp …
Un-School Camp: An Academic Fun and Fitness Summer Camp at Lakeland Community College sponsored by the Creative Education Institute.
This unique camp is for children aged 6 to 14 with learning differences and special needs: learning disabilities, Attention Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, or Asperger’s Syndrome. Children with learning differences often become so frustrated by school experiences that they never realize learning can be lots of fun. Campers play and have fun while gaining new perspectives on learning and developing the social skills and self-esteem needed to be successful.
At this “un-school” camp, instructors and aides use games, multi-sensory techniques – eyes, ears, touch, muscle movement -- and systematic instruction to improve basic reading and math skills. Science, theater arts, poetry, and computer mini-courses let children explore the world beyond the traditional classroom. One of the most popular activities is theater week where the campers script and act in a play. Every camper that participates receives a copy of the videotaped production.
The 2010 edition of the camp will be the ninth year since its founding. The Camp has been extremely successful with parents and campers. Many previous campers are planning to return to Camp in 2010.
The Academic Fun & Fitness Summer Camp is a 6 week session beginning June 14th through July 23rd, 2010 with full and half-day sessions available. Conveniently located at Lakeland Community College, in addition to basic skills, the campers enjoy lunch, sports, activities, and before and after-care.
“Grant’s reading skills improved significantly in your 6-week camp. Your counselors are great,” say Rose and Mike F., parents of a 6-year old.
